Electric Sauna Heaters for Home: 120V and 240V

Picked from listed specs and manufacturer documents; we haven't tested these units.

Quick picks

This page is for people building a sauna room or replacing a heater. For a small room, the VEVOR SCA-20NS is a 2 kW, 120V heater. For a mid-size room, the Harvia KIP45B is 4.5 kW at 240V. Match a heater to your room using the room-volume range on its listing or manual, not a rule of thumb.

120V heaters

Small heaters for small rooms. Even at 120V, a sauna heater may need its own circuit.

How to match a heater to your room

  1. Measure the inside of the room: length, width and height, in feet.
  2. Multiply them. That is the room volume in cubic feet.
  3. Pick a heater whose listed room-volume range includes your number.
  4. Check the heater manual for clearances and the minimum room height.

The Room-Size Checker does steps 1 to 3. The sauna size guide explains more.

Power requirements

Estimate / general guidance. Heater power is listed in kW and volts. Some heaters run on 120V, and most larger ones on 240V. Some need more than one supply circuit. Read 120V vs 240V requirements. Have a licensed electrician confirm your circuit, breaker and wiring, and follow the manufacturer's manual and local electrical code.

Electric vs wood-burning heaters

This page covers electric heaters only. A wood-burning stove needs a chimney and clear space around it, and its own manual and local code apply.

FAQ

What size sauna heater do I need?

Use the room-volume range on the heater's listing or manual. Work out your room's volume in cubic feet (length x width x height) and pick a heater whose listed range includes it. We don't use one rule for every room.

Do I need a 120V or 240V sauna heater?

It depends on the heater's listed needs and your home's power. In our picks, the small heater runs on 120V and the larger ones on 240V. Check the listing and the manual for power requirements; consult a licensed electrician.

Can I install a sauna heater myself?

Follow the manual. The 240V heaters here list supply wiring details, which is a job for a licensed electrician. Have a licensed electrician confirm your circuit, breaker and wiring, and follow the manufacturer's manual and local electrical code.

Should I get an electric or a wood-burning sauna heater?

Electric heaters need the right power supply, set up by an electrician. Wood-burning stoves need a chimney and clear space, per their manual and local code. This page covers electric heaters.
