How Much Electricity Does a Sauna Use?
A sauna's electricity use is its heater's listed kW multiplied by the hours it runs, including warm-up: kW × hours = kWh. For example, a 1.6 kW heater running 45 minutes uses about 1.2 kWh (estimate).
The formula
kW × hours = kWh
- kW is the heater power on the listing or in the manual.
- Hours is warm-up time plus session time. Divide minutes by 60.
- kWh is what your power bill counts.
Worked examples
Estimate / general guidance. These are example heaters, not specific products.
| Example heater | Warm-up + session | Hours | Estimated use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 kW | 15 + 30 minutes | 0.75 | about 1.2 kWh |
| 2 kW | 30 + 30 minutes | 1 | about 2 kWh |
| 4.5 kW | 45 + 45 minutes | 1.5 | about 6.75 kWh |
| 6 kW | 60 + 60 minutes | 2 | about 12 kWh (upper limit) |
Warm-up and session time: why both count
The heater runs while the room warms up, so warm-up counts. The formula assumes the heater runs at full power the whole time, which gives an upper limit. Harvia, a heater maker, says its heaters run at full power for the first 30–40 minutes and use less than half of full power to hold the temperature. Harvia's own example: a 6 kW heater uses about 7–9 kWh over two hours. So real use is often lower than the formula. Check your manual.
Turning kWh into cost
Multiply kWh by the rate per kWh on your power bill. The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes average home electricity prices by state each month: EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A (checked 2026-10-17). Your own bill gives the rate that applies to you.

Infrared vs traditional energy use
It depends on each heater's listed kW and how long it runs. Infrared cabins often list lower kW, and traditional heaters may take longer to warm up, but check the listing for your model. See infrared vs traditional sauna, sauna heaters by kW and 120V vs 240V requirements.
FAQ
Do saunas use a lot of electricity?
It depends on the heater's listed kW and how long it runs. Use kW × hours = kWh. For example, a 1.6 kW heater running 45 minutes uses about 1.2 kWh, as an estimate.
How much electricity does an infrared sauna use per hour?
About its listed kW in kWh for each hour at full power. A cabin listed at 1.6 kW uses up to about 1.6 kWh per hour, as an estimate. Check the listing for your model.
How do I calculate my sauna's running cost?
Multiply kWh by the rate per kWh on your power bill. The cost-to-run calculator does this for you.
Does warm-up time count toward electricity use?
Yes. The heater runs while the room warms up. Harvia says its heaters run at full power for the first 30–40 minutes. Check your manual for your model.
