What Size Sauna Do You Need? (1, 2 or 4+ People)

Start with how many people will use it, then compare each unit's listed outside footprint and height with your room, leaving the clearances the manual gives. For heaters, match your room volume to the heater's listed range.

Sizing by number of people

Go by the capacity the maker lists, then check the size. Here are listed sizes from our picks:

SaunaListed capacityListed outside size
SereneLife steam tentnot listed35.43 x 35.43 x 70.87 in
Dynamic Saunas Barcelona1–2 people (ideal for 1, per the maker)39 x 36 x 73 in
ZONEMEL 2-person traditional2 people51.2 x 41.3 x 74.8 in
Smartmak 3-person traditional3 people59.1 x 47.28 x 74.86 in, as listed
Dynamic Saunas Bergamo4 people70 x 42 x 75 in
ALEKO SKD4HEM4 people67.2 x 67.2 x 75 in, as listed

Two cabins for the same number of people can differ in size, so always check the listing.

Footprint and clearances

The footprint is the floor space the outside of the sauna takes up. The manual gives the space to leave around it, to walls and ceiling. Add those clearances to the footprint before you measure your room. Some cabins have a roof overhang: Golden Designs says the Barcelona's adds 2 in of depth.

Ceiling height

For a ready-made cabin, check its listed outside height against your ceiling, plus the clearance the manual gives. Our cabin picks are listed at about 73 to 75 in tall. For a room you build, the heater manual may set a minimum height. VEVOR, for example, lists a 76 in minimum room height for its 2 kW heater.

Heater sizing: reading a listed room-volume range

Heater makers list the room volume each heater suits, in cubic feet or cubic meters. Work out your room's volume (length x width x height, in feet) and pick a heater whose range includes it. Harvia, for example, lists 100–210 cu ft for its KIP45B. See sauna heaters by kW and voltage.
