Sauna Operating Cost Calculator
Enter your heater's listed kW, warm-up and session minutes, sessions per week, and your electricity rate. The calculator shows kWh first, then a cost estimate for the rate you enter.
This tool needs JavaScript to calculate. Without it, use the steps and guidance on this page.
Formula: kWh per session = kW × (warm-up + session minutes) ÷ 60. kWh per week = kWh per session × sessions per week. kWh per month = kWh per week × 52 ÷ 12. Cost = kWh × the rate you enter.
Assumes the heater draws its listed kW for the whole warm-up and session; actual use may be lower if the heater cycles (check your manual). Estimate / general guidance.
How it works
The calculator shows kWh per session, per week and per month. A cost estimate appears only after you enter your own rate, and it is worked out in your browser. Estimate based on the rate you entered; your utility bill will differ.
Estimate / general guidance. Example: a 1.6 kW heater running 15 minutes to warm up plus a 30-minute session uses about 1.2 kWh (1.6 × 45 ÷ 60).
Where to find your rate
Your power bill lists a price per kWh. For a rough guide, the U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes average home electricity prices by state: EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A (checked 2026-10-17).

FAQ
How much does it cost to run a sauna?
Multiply the heater's listed kW by the hours it runs, including warm-up, to get kWh. Then enter your rate in the calculator to see a cost estimate.
Where do I find my electricity rate?
On your power bill, as a price per kWh. The U.S. Energy Information Administration also publishes average home prices by state.
Why does warm-up time matter?
The heater runs while the room warms up, so warm-up time uses power too. Harvia says its heaters run at full power for the first 30–40 minutes. Check your manual.
